If you’re looking to perfect your brewing technique, follow this simple recipe to make the most of your Kalita Wave and enjoy a rich, aromatic coffee
Equipment:
-
Kalita Wave dripper
-
Kalita Wave filter (size appropriate for your dripper)
-
Coffee scale
-
Kettle (preferably with a gooseneck for precise pouring)
-
Coffee grinder (if using whole beans)
Ingredients:
- Freshly ground coffee (medium grind)
- Water (filtered is best)
Instructions:
-
Place the Kalita Wave dripper on top of your coffee cup or server.
-
Insert a Kalita Wave filter into the dripper and rinse it with hot water. This helps to remove any paper taste and preheats your dripper and server. Discard the rinse water.
-
For a standard 12 oz (350 ml) cup, use about 24 grams of coffee. Adjust the amount based on your taste preferences and cup size.
-
Grind the coffee to a medium coarseness, similar to sea salt. If the grind is too fine, it can clog the filter and cause over-extraction.
-
Heat your water to around 200°F (93°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit for about 30 seconds to reach the right temperature.
-
Add the ground coffee to the Kalita Wave filter and shake it gently to level the coffee bed.
-
Start by pouring a small amount of hot water (about twice the weight of the coffee) over the grounds to bloom them. Let it sit for 30-45 seconds. This allows gases from the coffee to escape and prepares the grounds for an even extraction.
-
Continue pouring the rest of the water in a slow, circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward, until you reach the desired amount. Aim to pour in about 2-3 minutes.
-
Allow the coffee to drip through completely. The total brewing time should be around 3-4 minutes.
-
Remove the dripper and discard the used coffee grounds and filter.
-
Stir the brewed coffee in your cup or server to ensure an even taste, then enjoy!
Adjust the coffee-to-water ratio, grind size, and pouring technique according to your taste preferences. Experimenting with these variables will help you find your perfect brew!
